Secrets of the Machane Yehuda Market
Secrets of the Machane Yehuda Market
A culinary tour of the Machane Yehuda is never just about food. Jerusalem’s colorful, bustling open market was founded in the late 19th century and thus, is full of stories and secrets that only the locals know and can share.
During the tour of the market’s winding streets, we will sample some of the delicious delicacies and fresh produce on display in the overflowing produce stands and spice shops but we will also meet the merchants and green grocers, some of whom are second and even third generation in the market and hear about their deep connection to this unique place.
We will also cross the main street and enter the charming community of Nachlaot – the closest residential neighborhood to the market where we will hear about the market from a different perspective. We will meet people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures who have lived in Nachlaot for several generations. They will surely fascinate you with their stories of what lies behind some of the historic names of streets and alleyways, the many neighborhood synagogues and enclosed courtyards. Nachlaot was settled by mostly Jewish immigrant families from Middle Eastern and North African countries. It is one of the first communities to be built outside the Old City walls.
Nachlaot, with its courtyards and winding alleyways, has become one of the most in-demand neighborhoods in Jerusalem and is very popular among artists and bohemian types.

Mishkenot Sha’ananim is one of Jerusalem’s most picturesque neighborhoods and the 19th-century windmill built by British Jewish philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore has become one of its most familiar landmarks and symbols the city. The windmill tells the story of entrepreneurship, Zionism, and innovation in the early Yishuv.
The original structure was designed as a flour mill and was part of Montefiore’s plan to create new places of work that would provide a livelihood in a place that would eventually become part of the evolving modern city outside the walls.
The tour will end with a wine tasting at the Windmill winery – currently the only operating winery in Jerusalem.
The established Visitors Center in the winery tells the story of the site and its deep connection to the Old City, creating a space where past and future meet, so visitors can experience the spirit of the city while enjoying local wines.
